About this project

COMPONENT ONE
Component one of this project consists of the founding and development of the leading academic Journal of Sustainable Aviation. The Journal of Sustainable Aviation would be a peer-reviewed, open-access, online and print launched publication to support the free exchange of ideas and information in the field of air transport sustainability. The Journal of Sustainable Aviation could be based on the example of the Pensoft Phytokeys Journal of Biodiversity Research or a SpringerOpen Journal model. Sage, Routledge and Springer are recognize as the leading publishers of academic journals. An academic journal is a peer-reviewed periodical in which scholarly & scientific relating to a particular academic discipline is published. Academic journals serve as forums for the introduction and presentation for scrutiny of new research and the critique of existing research. Content typically takes the form of articles presenting original research, review articles and book reviews. The development of a topic based academic journal is a recognized way to accelerate research in a chosen field. There is a movement in higher education encouraging open access to peer-reviewed scholarly research, either via self archiving, whereby the author deposits a paper in a disciplinary or institutional repository where it can be searched for and read, or via publishing it in a free open access journal, which does not charge for subscriptions. Open access is primarily intended for scholarly journal articles, but is also provided for a growing number of theses, book chapters and scholarly monographs. Members of the Sustainable Aviation Professionals Association (another Sustainable Sky project) would automatically receive regular updates of the latest research from this journal via email alerts. The only known similar journal in this field is the “International Journal of Sustainable Aviation” which was launched by a Turkey based academic in July 2014. The vision, focus and quality of this journal is unknown.

COMPONENT TWO
Component two of this project consists of the creation and development of an online open-source Sustainable Aviation research library. Research published in the Journal of Sustainable Aviation or meeting similar quality controls (such as being published in an approved academic journal elsewhere) would be added to this easy-to-use searchable open online library. This would allow authors to promote their research and for their research to have a valuable impact on those who most need the information. Finding peer reviewed research documents on niche sustainable aviation topics (especially policy, business and technology) can be nigh-impossible and time consuming for airline professionals which is known to be a barrier potentially delaying or derailing sustainable aviation related business cases and actions. This go-to library would help solve this challenge. Research authors would submit their papers through an automated online form. Research could either be uploaded to, or linked from, this library. Examples of current sustainable aviation research and how it is presented are available here: http://partner.mit.edu/reports-papers/general , http://lae.mit.edu/reports/ , http://131.111.147.69/publications.html. These kinds of high quality research paper websites across the internet would be automatically data harvested, cataloged and added to the sustainable aviation research library. Additionally the NASA Technical Reports Server and similar large scale technical repositories would be data harvested and filtered for sustainable aviation knowledge. This would create the world's first and largest searchable online pool of knowledge on sustainable aviation.
